Bons Temps Roulés est une histoire : celle des communautés noires au début des années 80 avant l’ouragan Katrina. Bernard Hermann nous entraine à la découverte de ces vies dures, délurées et souvent joyeuses, dans cette « Big Easy » où les descendants d’esclaves écrivent leur nouvelle histoire.
Riche de 170 images en noir et blanc prises entre 1979 à fin 1982, c’est un voyage visuel inédit. « Bons Temps Roulés » peut aussi se découvrir en musique. Une centaine de chansons de musiciens de la Nouvelle-Orléans sont accessibles en streaming, via un flash code imprimé sur l’une des premières pages.
En janvier 1979, Bernard Hermann, ancien grand reporter au quotidien France-Soir, ouvre ses objectifs dans la ville ville natale de sa grand-mère. Il va pénétrer au cœur des quartiers du Back O’Town, essentiellement à Trémé, aussi dans les 7e et 9e districts, et dans les ‘projects’, l’équivalent américain des cités HLM, répondant aux savoureux noms de « Désir » ou « Iberville ». C’est la Nouvelle Orléans que les touristes ne visitent pas.
Les photos sont légendées d’un texte écrit après Katrina par le photographe, prenant alors conscience de l’importance de clichés « sur une période vraiment terminée« . « C’est une ville qui a beaucoup de charme, mais une ville très dure », a confié à l’AFP ce témoin privilégié d’une époque révolue.

Bons Temps Roulés or The Good Times Rolled (English title) tells the story of Black New Orleans before Katrina – life like it really was in the Eighties. Bernard Hermann zooms in on the hard but often joyous moments in the Big Easy where the descendants of slaves are still very much writing their story.
Containing 170 high quality black & white photos taken between 1979 and end 1982, the book is an exceptional visual journey that can be enjoyed with music. 100 songs from New Orleans musicians are available via streaming using a flash code in the book.
In January 1979, Bernard Hermann, a former lead reporter at the French daily France-Soir, left France for his maternal grandmother’s hometown. He focused on the Back O’Town area, mainly Trémé and the 7th and 9th wards, as well as the projects with elegant names such as Désir and Iberville – an area that few tourists visit.
The photos each have a commentary by the photographer post-Katrina who realized the importance of these images “that witness a time gone by”. “This is a town that has a lot of charm but where life is very hard.” notes Bernard Hermann.
